Epic Drop for ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’; Henry Cavill in ‘Voltron’; ‘Velma’ Sent Packing; ‘Shinobi’ Headed for Silver Screen; ‘Alien: Romulus’ Heads to Streaming

More Hollywood news has hit the wire, and it’s time for a round-up!

Joker: Folie a Deux had an epic drop at the box office in its second weekend, taking in only $7.06 million, an 81% drop from the first weekend, when it ended up with a disappointing $37.6 million, according to Deadline.  The first weekend number was reduced from last Sunday’s $40 million estimate (see “Joker: Folie a Deux’ Tanks“) when final numbers came in.  Part of the problem may have been that director Todd Phillips reportedly distanced himself from DC Studios during the production of the film, eliminating the possibility of any creative input from people more familiar with the characters, according to an in-depth article last week in Variety.

Henry Cavill will star in Amazon MGM Studio’s new Voltron movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  He joins a cast that includes newcomer Daniel Quinn-Toye, who was an understudy to Tom Holland in the West End theater production of Romeo & Juliet.  This project will be helmed by Rawson Marshall Thurber (see “Live-Action ‘Voltron’“).

HBO has officially signed Aaron Pierre on to play the role of John Stewart in Lanterns, according to Variety.  It had previously been reported that he and Stephan James were both up for the role (see “‘Lanterns’“), but it appears Pierre has won the role.

The Velma adult animated series on Max has been cancelled, according to Variety.  Mindy Kaling’s fresh take on the Scooby Doo character and the Mystery Team (see “‘Velma’“) lasted two seasons.

Universal Pictures will adapt Shinobi into a live-action movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  This project will be based on the 1987 video game series by Sega and helmed by Sam Hargrave. Universal has done very well with video game adaptation in the past, most recently with The Super Mario Bros. Movie (see “‘Super Mario’ Over $1B“).

Alien: Romulus is headed to streaming on October 15, 2024, according to Variety.  This movie, which was the seventh Alien movie, outperformed at the box office (see “‘Alien: Romulus’ Wins Weekend“).  It will later head to a 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD release on December 3, 2024.
