The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 trailer
Watch the most recent Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 trailer here:
Here, we finally see the full party, and we learn about one new location they plan to visit – literal, actual hell. The new season promises romance, with Keyleth and Vax’s long-awaited first kiss shown off in the trailer.
But Vox Machina season 3 also promises heartache. Fans of the original tabletop actual play have some idea what is coming, but everyone else will have to wait until October to see how Vox Machina plans to hurt them. The trailer shows us a coffin, Vex crying out in despair, and several pep talks for the team. Heck, the very first line of the trailer tells us “the future is frightening”.
Before that, Prime Video released a brief ‘first look’ teaser trailer (watch it above), which shows most of the party getting held up by guards in the city of Ank’Harel, and the group’s main sponsor – the Sorcerer/merchant Gilmore – being captured using a magical bolas.
The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 plot
In Vox Machina Season 3, our heroes will travel to Exandria’s version of hell, on their quest to save the land from the villainous DnD dragons of the Chroma Conclave, and their leader: the ancient red dragon Thordak, a.k.a. the Cinder King.
Critical Role says that “everything is at stake” in this season, and “our lovable band of misfits must rise above inner (and outer) demons to try and save their loved ones, Tal’Dorei, and all of Exandria.” It seems we’ll be delving into the characters’ traumatic backgrounds and family ties once again!
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Travis Willingham (Vox Machina Executive Producer and the voice of Grog in the show) has teased that the minor players in Vox Machina’s cast will get more screen time, and that we can expect more threats beyond the Chroma Conclave, with new and familiar villains putting pressure on the adventuring party.
Beyond that, details are scant – we’ll just have to wait for October 3! In the meantime, we can take a few clues from recalling what happened in the last season (if you haven’t seen it and don’t want spoilers, look away now!)
Legend of Vox Machina Season 2 plot recap
(Spoiler warning for Season 2)
The Legend of Vox Machina Season 2 opens with the adventuring party’s victory celebrations being cut short by the arrival of the Chroma Conclave, a cabal of ancient chromatic dragons set on destroying the governments of Tal’Dorei and Draconia, and carving up their territories between themselves.
Faced with four powerful new dragon adversaries – Thordak (Lance Reddick); Raishan (Cree Summer); Umbrasyl (Matthew Mercer); and Vorugal (Liam O’Brien) – our heroes travel across Exandria to recover the Vestiges of Divergence: ancient and lost magical artifacts which were scattered during ‘The Calamity’, centuries before this story.
In the course of Season 2, Vox Machina recovers eight of these artifacts, while working towards a final confrontation with the black dragon Umbrasyl (and confronting issues from the heroes’ pasts, most notably Grog defeating his uncle Kevdak to claim the vestige known as the Titanstone Knuckles).
At the season’s conclusion, the party kills Umbrasyl after a deadly fight, then go to the city of Whitestone to rest and celebrate, and are met by the priest, Keeper Yennen (voiced by Gina Torres). Yennen then reveals they were not as they seemed, transforms into the green dragon Raishan, and offers to become Vox Machina’s ally in taking down Thordak.
At the very close of the season, however, we see Thordak – confident despite the loss of Umbrasyl – telling Vorugal he has a new army coming. We’re then shown several glowing eggs, seemingly dragon eggs ready to provide reinforcements to the Chroma Conclave.
The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 cast and characters
The core cast of Vox Machina remains the same for season three:
- Ashley Johnson: Pike the Gnome Cleric
- Laura Bailey: Vex’ahlia the Half-elf Ranger / Rogue
- Liam O’Brien: Vax’ildan the Half-elf Rogue / Paladin
- Marisha Ray: Keyleth the Half-elf Druid
- Sam Riegel: Scanlan the Gnome Bard
- Taliesin Jaffe: Percy the Human Gunslinger
- Travis Willingham: Grog the Goliath Barbarian / Fighter
Critical Role has also confirmed that legendary actor Lance Reddick will reprise his role as the voice of Thordak in season 3, as he recorded all his voice lines before he passed away in early 2023.
Critical Role Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer will likely continue to voice a host of other characters. So far, Vox Machina has featured a host of other well-known voice actors, but no one has been announced for Vox Machina season 3 yet.
Despite this, we can speculate about potentially returning voice actors. Based on how season 2 ended, we expect to see more of Keeper Yennen (voiced by Gina Torres).

Will there be a Vox Machina Season 4?
Vox Machina Season 4 hasn’t been confirmed yet. There’s plenty of content left to cover from the original Critical Role campaign (including an entirely different villain to face after the Chroma Conclave), so Vox Machina will have plenty of ways to expand should a fourth season go ahead.
However, another Critical Role TV series has been confirmed – The Mighty Nein, an animated series focusing on the second Critical Role campaign. It’s possible that this may take priority after Vox Machina season 3 is wrapped up.
