‘The Crow’ Bombs, ‘Coraline’ Surging; ‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ Gets Canned; James Spader Returns as Ultron; ‘LotR: War of the Rohirrim’ Trailer; ‘Secret Level’ Features ‘D&D’ and ‘Warhammer 40,000’; New ‘Pacific Rim’ Series; ‘Devilina’ to Be Adapted

The last week of summer before Labor Day brings in a heat wave of Hollywood news.  It’s time for a round-up!

Deadpool & Wolverine returned to the top of the domestic box office, as The Crow remake bombed and Coraline continued its surprisingly strong showing in its 15th anniversary release.  After an $18.3 million domestic box office take this weekend, Deadpool & Wolverine is now at $577.2 million domestic and $1.21 billion worldwide, according to Variety.  At the other end of the spectrum, The Crow remake, which cost $50 million to make, grossed only $4.6 million in its opening weekend.  Laika’s Coraline, released by Fathom in a newly remastered 3D version for the film’s 15th anniversary, continued its strong showing in its second weekend, and is now at $22.5 million in domestic box office, according to Deadline.

Lucasfilm has opted to cancel The Acolyte after one season, according to Deadline.  The series, created by showrunner Leslye Headland (see “Project Announcements at Investor Day“), received a solid 78% rating on reviews from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but only an 18% viewer rating.

James Spader will once again be the voice of Ultron, according to Variety.  He reprises this character from Avengers: Age of Ultron (see “James Spader to Play Ultron“) in the upcoming Vision series, starring Paul Bettany (see “New Vision Series“).

Warner Bros. Pictures released an official trailer for The Lord of the Rings: War of Rohirrim (see below).  This animated movie, directed by Kenji Kamiyama (see “‘LOTR’ Anime Date Set“), will hit theaters on December 25, 2024.

Amazon Prime Video released a teaser for Secret Level (see below).  This new adult-animated anthology features 15 stories from some of the most beloved gaming worlds, including Dungeons & Dragons, Warhammer 40,000, Mega Man, PAC-Man, and more.  It will hit streaming on December 10, 2024.  Amazon also recently released another blockbuster animated series, Batman: Caped Crusader (see “‘Batman: Caped Crusader’“).

Eric Heisserer and Carmen Lewis are developing a Pacific Rim series for Legendary Entertainment, according to Variety.  This series is part of a first look deal with Legendary, and will be a prequel to the movies (see “‘Pacific Rim’ Trailer“).

Atlas Comics is adapting Devilina for Paramount Pictures, according to Deadline.  Devilina, the sister of Satan, first appeared in Atlas Comics in Devilina #1 in 1975, and was inspired by horror comics’ seductresses Vampirella and Satana.  Atlas/Seaboard Comics was launched in the 70s by Martin Goodman, and then re-launched in 2010 by his grandson Jason Goodman (see “Atlas Returns“).  In 2019, Ghost Rider Producer Steven Paul’s SP Media Group bought a majority stake in Atlas, and signed a first-look deal with Paramount, which eventually made this project possible.
