‘Godzilla x Kong’ a Monster; ‘Gen V’ Star Dies in Accident; ‘Star Trek 4’ Gets Writer; ‘Doctor Who’ Trailer; ‘Spider-verse’ Short Film Releases; Confluential Films to Adapt ‘Heist’

Hollywood news keeps hopping along, and it’s time for a round-up!

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (see “’Godzilla x Kong’ Trailer“), the latest in Legendary’s MonsterVerse, had a monster opening weekend of $80 million in North America, according to Variety.  It’s the second largest opening in the franchise after the 2014 Godzilla, but ahead of three others.  With the international take of $114 million, the film took in a total of $194 million in its opening weekend.

Chance Perdomo has died in a tragic motorcycle accident.  Perdomo played Andre Anderson on the hit The Boy’s spinoff, Gen V (see “‘The Boys’ Spinoff“).  The producers of the series shared the following statement about his death on X: “We can’t quite wrap our heads around this.  For those of us who knew him and worked with him, Chance was always charming and smiling, an enthusiastic force of nature, an incredibly talented performer, and more than anything else, just a very kind, lovely person.  Even writing about him in the past tense doesn’t make sense.  We are so sorry for Chance’s family, and we are grieving the loss of our friend and colleague.  Hug your loved ones tonight.” R.I.P. Paramount Pictures has attached a new writer to the upcoming Star Trek 4 movie, according to Variety.  The new writer will be Steve Yockey, the creator of Max’s The Flight Attendant.  Paramount first announced that they were developing this movie in January 2024 (see “New ‘Star Trek’ Movie“).

Disney+ revealed a new trailer for the upcoming season of Doctor Who (see below).  The new season will hit Disney+ on May 10, 2024 (see “‘Doctor Who’“).

Sony Pictures Entertainment released The Spider Within: A Spider-verse Story onto YouTube (see below).  This is a full-length animated short created in partnership with the Kevin Love Fund, incorporating a mental health-focused lesson about panic attacks into it.  Sony had recently pushed off the upcoming Beyond the Spider-verse release due to the SAG-AFTRA strike (see “‘Beyond the Spider-verse’ Undated“).

Producer Tommy Oliver’s Confluential Films will adapt Heist: Or How to Steal a Planet into a feature film.  It will be based off of the 2019 comic book of the same name by Vault Comics.  They have already attached Justin Simien (Haunted Mansion, Dear White People) to helm the project and Christopher Yost (The Mandalorian, Thor: Ragnarok) to pen the script.
