New Crusader Kings 3 DLC brings Byzantines and Black Death

A year’s worth of Crusader Kings 3 DLC has just been announced. On February 6, Paradox revealed ‘Chapter III’ for the game, a bundle of updates that includes DLC both large and small: everything it plans to release for its royal roleplaying strategy game in 2024.

Legends of the Dead is the first big piece of content that will come out for the 4X game this year – and fans won’t have to wait long. Bringing features that will allow you to shape your legacy, as well as new plagues to scourge your land, this Crusader Kings 3 core update will arrive on March 4.

But there are four pieces of DLC coming to the game altogether, with two big ‘uns. As well as Legends of the Dead, the event pack Wandering Nobles brings encounters on the road, the cosmetic pack Couture of the Capets gives you some fancy French digs to dress up in, and the major expansion Roads to Power fleshes out the Byzantine Empire.

The Chapter III bundle for Crusader Kings 3 is available to pre-order now. This will give you access to all of the DLC when it comes out, at a discounted price than buying them all separately. It’ll be priced at $43.98 / £38.48 – but right now is available at 20% off on Steam.

Looking at these DLC packs in a little more depth, Couture of the Capets is just some cosmetics, with a few more cloaks, coats, and headgear. It’s presented as a bonus cosmetic pack that you get for purchasing Chapter 3, and can be downloaded right now.

Legends of the Dead, coming March 4, seems to have two rather disparate main mechanics: legends and plagues. But by the looks of things it’s all about stuff spreading across the map. You can write, promote, and alter your own legends, as well as build legendary buildings.

Meanwhile plagues will spawn and ravage your lands, creating scary events and killing off characters. The Steam page for this expansion also describes a mechanic called Legitimacy, which will affect how easy it is to rule your lands.

In Roads to Power, according to a press release, “The majesty of the Byzantine Empire takes center stage.” You can enjoy the sexy new feature of administrative government systems (grand strategy games, you gotta love ‘em), manage a family estate, become a landless adventurer, and take part in chariot races. No doubt, this pack, which comes out in Q3 2024, will be very attractive to a lot of Paradox fans, thanks to that good, good Byzantine flavor.

Finally, Wandering Nobles arrives at the end of the year – Q4 2024. It looks to beef up the travel system brought in by past DLC (check out our CK3 Tours and Tournaments review here) and offers new mini activities like surveying your lands or visiting monuments, as well as new events and encounters to experience while moving from A to B.
