‘Dungeons & Dragons’ ‘Dark Tower’ Designer Passes Away

R.I.P. Jennell Jaquays

Veteran tabletop and video game creator Jennell Jaquays passed away on January 10, 2024.

Jaquays was best known for creating the Dark Tower and Caverns of Thracia modules (see “Judges Guild’s ‘Caverns of Thracia’“) for Dungeons & Dragon during her time at Judges Guild. As an illustrator, Jaquays rendered several RPG covers, including the iconic cover for Dragon Mountain. Jaquays also worked for video game companies, including id Software, which was responsible for the Quake video games. She was inducted into the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts & Design Hall of Fame for her early work on Dungeoneer magazine (see “2017 Origins Award Winners“).

As an activist for transgender rights, Jaquays served as the creative director for the Transgender Human Rights Institute in Seattle. There, she helped push forward the petition for Leelah’s Law, which outlaws conversion therapy for LGBTQ+ youth. Jaquays’ passing came as she was recuperating from treatment of Guillain-Barré syndrome. She was 67 years old at her time of passing. ICv2 offers its condolences to her friends and family.
