A screen-matched Star Wars X-Wing starfighter prop sold for $3.1 million at Heritage’s Greg Jein Collection Hollywood Platinum Signature Auction, which took place on October 14-15, 2023.
The fabled Star Wars movie model, which resurfaced after over four decades as part of Greg Jein’s estate, was the “hero” model of the Red Leader X-Wing starfighter that was used for close-up VFX shots during Luke Skywalker’s perilous trench run in A New Hope (see “Fabled ‘Star Wars’ Movie Prop“). The bidding for this piece started at $400,000 and accelerated all the way up to $3.1 million. Other Star Wars items also did well, including an original Imperial Stormtrooper suit that sold for $645,000.
Overall, the Greg Jein auction realized a total of $13,611,406. This is the second-highest grossing Hollywood auction in history, just behind the $22.8 Debbie Reynolds auction in 2011. The bulk of the collection was Star Trek costumes and props (see “Heritage’s Epic ‘Star Trek’ Auction“), which included a blue Mr. Spock tunic from Season 3 of the original series and Kirk’s field uniform from Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan. These two items realized $150,000 each.
