Sensational She-Hulk #1 delivers a solid fun start

Sensational She-Hulk #1

Jen Walters is dusting off her adjective and kicking off a new era! She-Hulk is back and she’s sensational! Sensational She-Hulk #1 delivers a mix of romance and laughs in a debut issue that’s easy to dive in to and just sit back and enjoy.

I honestly don’t know a ton about She-Hulk. It’s a character I’ve only slightly followed and it’s more in recent years I’ve read the comics. I think I have some classic issues but the lawyer aspect with humor wasn’t something my much younger self enjoyed. As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to appreciate the mix of superheroics and slice of life that comics like Sensational She-Hulk delivers

Sensational She-Hulk #1 from writer Rainbow Rowell delivers a nice balance of it all with a nice focus on humor and the lighthearted nature of the character, and from what I know, her popular run in the past. The comic’s main focus is Jen’s attempt at a “normal” life. Yes, she’s She-Hulk, but she attempts a relationship, work, and Punch Club.

The result is a fun debut that feels like it picks up from the previous volume but at the same time explains things enough new readers can pick up an issue and just enjoy it. It helps that Rowell keeps things focused on the key points and doesn’t dive too much into She-Hulk’s history that you need to do research to appreciate it all. The clients are easy enough to understand. The relationship is explained and Punch Club is just a dose of fun.

A lot of the lighthearted nature of the comic is due to the art of Andrés Genolet, colors of Dee Cunniffe, and lettering of Joe Caramagna. It all comes together for a bright and cheery look, even when the characters are a bit grumpy. There’s an emphasis on the body language and facial expressions that adds to the more emotional nature of it all instead of a punchy physical. What’s also nice is the focus on the size of individuals. She-Hulk towers over Jack of Hearts and makes him look more “cute” than heroic. It helps lower the seriousness of everything and adds to the playful nature of it all.

Sensational She-Hulk #1 is a solid start that delivers a lot of laughs and plants a flag as to what this comic is. It has a clear voice and focus and should be interesting to see where it goes after the ending. Overall, a fun comic that long time fans should enjoy and new readers can dive in to.
