I’m catching up with some NECA Target Haulathon releases today with the Bebop and Rocksteady variants Mighty Hog and Rhino-Man from the episode where they pretend to be super-heroes. Let’s take a look!
The box keeps with the established style and has some great illustrations and a big window up front with character photos on the sides and back.
The set comes with BeBop and Rocksteady in their costumes as well as two jetpacks, a lovely 1980s brick of a cell phone, three sets of hands each (fist, grip, and a right chop and left bunny fingers), a removeable pair of goggles and the Anxieatron.
The goggles complete Rhino-Man’s costume and feature crystal clear lenses and a flexible strap that holds them in place well.
The jet packs have a sleek design that fits securely on pegs underneath the character’s capes and bears all the design hallmarks of the show’s Krang-based tech.
Shredder uses the cell phone brick in this particular episode, but the boys can use it too, in case they want to call their agent or mom or something.
The chop hand and “v” finger hand are there so they can swear to never “be heroes “go straight again.” like in the episode.
The anxieatron, a device featured in the episode Bebop and Rocksteady Conquer the Universe, is the highlight of the accessories for me and features a lot of small paint hits on all the cartoon-tech detail. I especially like the way they used some real tubes to complete the look.
The sculpting captures the bulk of these two well and the likenesses are somewhat updated from the usual Bebop and Rocksteady portraits and feel even more straight out of the cartoon than the original figures. Rocksteady in particular feels fresher with a shorter and wider snout.
The capes are a nice soft material with a natural hang to them and allow for full articulation. They have the standard articulation for this line with:
- Swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, hips, and ankles
- Ball and socket head, and torso
- Double hinged knees and elbows
- Hinged jaws.
The hinged jaws, nice neck range of motion, and animated portraits make for expressive poses. The paint on these is solid as ever with excellent matte finishes and carefully placed detail lines all over the costume.
Overall these are a fun couple of variants of two of my favorite Ninja Turtles characters. I really love the new portraits on these two and I’m curious to see if NECA would re-do the original BeBop and Rocksteady in this style. These characters are drawn differently from episode to episode, sometimes from frame to frame in the same episode, so I think another interpretation of the classic looks might be cool.
