‘Hot Pockets’ Enters the ‘Magic: The Gathering Arena’

Wizards of the Coast’s Magic: The Gathering brand has teamed up with Nestle’s Hot Pockets to offer unlockable in-game rewards on MTG Arena.

The commercial branding crossovers, seemingly kicked into full swing by the Universes Beyond initiative (see “Licensing Plans for ‘Magic: The Gathering’“), continue on into 2023.  However, they seem to have taken a meme-worthy twist with WotC’s newest cross-promotion involving Hot Pockets, Nestle’s pre-packaged and often cheesy microwave sandwiches.  There will be eight products featuring planeswalkers Gideon, Jace, Chandra, and Vivian that will feature allow hungry players to receive redemption codes after uploading a receipt of purchase.  The codes unlock MTG Arena online rewards such as a pre-constructed deck, a Planeswalker Avatar, XP, and more.

As expected, the reactions of MTG Arena fans on Twitter to this promotion were mixed (see below).  Some of the reactions were “Did April Fools come a month early”; “I haven’t been this excited over a food product since Danny Phantom was on Kid Cuisine” and “Weird collab but can’t wait to buy it once I have money.”  A few reactions noted that there were only four of the five colors in Magic represented in the crossover products offered, with a Black mana-themed sandwich notably missing.  The promotion runs from March 1, 2023 to June 30, 2023, and the last day to upload receipts is on July 30, 2023.
