Gallant Knight Games has launched a Kickstarter campaign for SYMA, their new Incense & Iron RPG. It’s a dark fantasy setting, with inspiration taken from the Iberian Peninsula. The game was designed intentionally vague in places, letting GMs fill in the blanks themselves for as to how they want their game to run.
From the campaign:
SYMA is a dark fantasy world, inspired in part by the history of the Iberian Peninsula, games like Elden Ring, Bloodbourne, Dark Souls, as well as the themes of an oppressive medieval Church, violent history and conquest, and magic! Incense & Iron is a genre where medieval settings exist and feudal populations are in conflict with monolithic religious entities.
Like most of my setting writing, SYMA is more of a loose collection of themes and guidelines than a gazetteer with excessive details. There’s demons, undead saints, and a random Saint canonization generator themed to SYMA as well as loads more tables and charts than I normally write (but like, not too many. I’m still me and I still write mostly rules light games.)
The setting is deliberately presented as incomplete, allowing you to fill in the blanks as you need when you play.
However, the game mechanics are complete (it uses a modified version of the Breathless system by Fari RPGs), has rules for magic, experience, enemies and solo play inspired and iterated from Alex T’s great work at Blackoath Entertainment (used with permission of course!) Its still a rules-light game that favors rulings over rules, so please be aware!
The campaign’s headed to 2x funded with 12 days left to go.
