Written by Mark Waid, Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #2 is a blast to read with an energy and style about it that leaves a smile on reader’s face. Waid keeps things rapid fire and doesn’t drag things out putting in the resolution to Superman’s health, the revelation of who the “big bad” is, as well as some action and next steps in our heroes’ battle. And amazingly, it all feels fully fleshed out with no aspect feeling like it gets the short shrift.
What’s truly great is that Waid doesn’t focus on just Superman and Batman. While the duo headline the comic, the standout of the comic is the Doom Patrol but even more so Supergirl and Robin. That last duo get the spotlight as they’re sent on a mission. The back and forth between the two is amazing with a patter that’ll get readers laughing. It left me wanting to know what the hell they’re going on about and hope Waid reveals more as far as that. It’s just fantastic in so many ways.
That fun energy is enhanced by the art. Dan Mora‘s pencils, Tamra Bonvillain‘s color, and Aditya Bidikar‘s lettering all comes together to create a look that has the same fun, positive energy, that fits Waid’s writing. There’s so many great details to the comic and story, so much humor comes out of the reactions of characters. Robin and Supergirl’s body language alone delivers laughs and then add in the more comical Doom Patrol. But the comic is fantastic in that it is able to deliver that humor, action, “evil bad guys”, and the art never dips into dark and ominous. Like the dialogue and patter, the art keeps it light and fun.
Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #2 is fun. It’s a hell of a lot of fun. The series is quickly becoming a favorite of mine with an energy that makes reading the comic enjoyable. It’s a reminder that comics can be fun and entertaining and succeed without a dark cloud hanging over every aspect. It’s a ray of light that’s been missed and needed.
