Over three dozen comics creators and editors are collaborating on a benefit anthology to raise funds for refugees from Ukraine. Comics for Ukraine: Sunflower Seeds is being crowdfunded on the Zoop platform, with a campaign that includes retailer levels for hardcover and softcover copies of the book.
Scott Dunbier, Director of Special Projects at IDW Publishing, is spearheading the independent project, which will be available in several formats: A hardcover with cover art by Alex Ross and three softcover versions with covers by Arthur Adams, Dave Johnson, and Bill Sienkiewicz. All will be 96 pages, full color, with a trim size of 8” x 12”. Contributors include Brent Anderson, Sergio Aragones, June Brigman, Kurt Busiek, Howard Chaykin, Joshua Dysart, Mark Evanier, Emil Ferris, Dave Gibbons, Rob Guillory, John Layman, Gabriel Rodriguez, Stan Sakai, Louise Simonson, Walter Simonson, Chris Sprouse, Jill Thompson, Matt Wagner, and Mark Waid.
Once printing costs, credit-card fees, and other fixed expenses are paid, all proceeds from the crowdfunding campaign will go to fund relief efforts by Operation USA, which is supporting local organizations aiding Ukrainian refugees in Poland and other nearby countries. As of this writing, over $23,000 has been raised toward the crowdfunding goal of $35,000.
“Like everyone, I have been sickened by the atrocities perpetrated on the Ukrainian people for nearly two months,” Dunbier said in a statement accompanying the announcement, “and I had to do something, anything, to try and help. The comic-book community is full of good and caring people who have stepped up to say, ‘I stand with Ukraine,’ and to contribute to this book.”
American publishers have reached out in different ways to support the people of Ukraine (see “American, International Comics Publishers Rally Around Ukraine”), and the new nonprofit organization RollvsEvil is also supporting the people of Ukraine (see “Co-Founders of Modiphius Entertainment Launch RollvsEvil”).
