Star Wars: Han Solo & Chewbacca #1

As a child who grew up during the initial era of Star Wars, I can fondly remember how I loved running around in Star Wars pajamas. It was the first thing that connected me and my cousins. We grew up more like brothers and Star Wars was one of the cable tows that tethered us together. We would watch it every time it came on television.

In fact, when the VHS of each movie came out, we would use the family VCR on a daily basis, watching those films in order. We all projected ourselves into our favorite characters. Mine was always Han Solo, as he exhibited “cool” when other characters seemed mostly idealistic. In Star Wars: Han Solo & Chewbacca #1, we get an adventure involving our favorite duo and unexpected ally before the events of A New Hope.

We meet Han and Chewie, as in the middle of a heist , on a casino planet with a crew of thieves. As they barely escaped the planet, they eventually arrive on Tattoine to receive their bounty, from Jabba The Hut, who already has another job waiting for them. As the job seems simple enough, which is to grab a urn of someone important, but they will be getting some help, from none other than Greedo. This is where things  gets complicated, as we soon find out that it leads them back to Han’s home planet, Corellia, which unintentionally conjures   ghosts of Han’s past to comes knocking. By the issue’s end, the reader and long time fans finally find out what lead Han to shoot Greedo in A New Hope.

Overall, Star Wars: Han Solo & Chewbacca #1 is a story that dives deeper into the man we know as Han Solo. The story Guggenheim is masterful. The art by the creative team is gorgeous. Altogether, one of the better Star Wars stories to come out since Disney bought Lucasfilm.
