With every generation, there is the version of a major franchise that everyone loves. Take for instance, Blade Runner. As I was old enough to remember the original movie when it came out and enjoyed it for the action. As I was pretty young when it came out, many of the high concepts went over my head.
Fast forward to today, and having enjoyed the animated series, I finally got as chance to re-watch the original and sequel by Denis Villaneueve, and it all made sense. The same goes for the new iterations for Star Trek, Dune and Star Wars, as it takes fans to show why you should love each of these franchises. This is why Star Trek: Discovery is more of an acquired taste, one that excels more than it meanders. In the debut issue of the spotlight miniseries, we get Star Trek: Discovery – Adventures in the 32nd Century #1, where we meet Grudge The Cat.
We find Grudge, as they survey the stars, but quickly remembers that they are hungry as soon as Cleveland Booker, reminds them of such, whereby enjoying some quality time with her master. As we find out how long they have been together and the moment both their lives changed, when Michael Burnham entered their lives. This gave Grudge more challenges than they expected, even leading an usurper disguising themselves as Cleveland, which they trapped the imposter. By issue’s end, Grudge resumes their mantle, asleep in her bed.
Overall, Star Trek: Discovery – Adventures in the 32nd Century #1 is a lighthearted tryst in the Star Trek Universe. The story by Johnson and Beyer is entertaining. The art by the creative team is gorgeous. Altogether, a fun back story on one of the series most loved characters.
