It sounds like Gold Key is going to be making a comeback under new leadership. As revealed on the Spec Tales podcast, Lance Linderman, Adam Brooks, Mike Dynes, and Arnold Guerrero purchased the company, now Gold Key Entertainment LLC, in late 2021. The cost was cash and a copy of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1.
The focus currently is finding talent to work with as well as assessing what past titles from the publisher can be resurrected. Some are currently tied up in publishing deals with other companies. Linderman indicated the company is talking to the Boris Karloff estate for a potential deal.
Gold Key original launched in 1962 and was known for license comics based on Star Trek, Twilight Zone, Walt Disney, King Features Syndicate characters, and Hanna-Barbera. They also launched characters like Doctor Solar, Turok, and Magnus, Robot Fighter. The company shut down in 1984. Some of the company’s former comics and characters were released in reprints and original comics by Dynamite Entertainment around 2015 and 2016. Characters like Doctor Solar, Turok, and Magnus had a push in the mid-90s in new comics published by Valiant.
Gold Key Comics was created in 1962 by Western Publishing Company for in-house publishing. Western had partnered and packaged content for Dell Comics. In 1979 Mattel purchased the company and then sold it in 1993 to real-estate investor Richard A. Bernstein who closed it in 1984. In 2021 comics creator and hacker Robert Willis obtained the trademark.
