The various volumes of team-up comics featuring Batman and Superman aren’t ones I regularly read. Team-up comics in generally have never been my thing. I might pick up something here and there but it’s never been a must read. Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #1 kicks off a new volume with Mark Waid at the helm writing. Waid is what had me pick this one up. Not only do I generally enjoy his comics but I know he also has a depth of knowledge about DC that should make this one an interesting read.
And I’m glad I picked up this debut issue. Waid has put together a comic that feels classic in a lot of ways. There’s just something simplistic in the duo of bad guys, the mystery figure looming, the hero in distress, and a difficult solution. Poison Ivy has come to Metropolis and it’s up to Superman to stop her! No, it’s actually Batman and Robin. But, it’s good they’re there as Metallo is also in the mix of villains to deal with!
Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #1 is fun and pulpy adventure with superheroes being exactly that and having to save individuals from falling debris and stop the villains from whatever their plan is. There’s nothing dark or brooding here. It’s an adventure with a classic feel that has an upbeat feel to it, even when things are looking rough for our heroes. The comic is simply fun.
Fun is the key word here and it almost feels like the heroes are having it too. Batman is in his grey and blue. Robin has long pants. The Penguin looks more like his classic design you’d expect with the Super Friends. That’s what the comic feels like in it’s vibe. There’s quips and distractions from heroes. It’s missing the negative, the brooding.
That’s all helped and enhanced by the art of Dan Mora, color by Tamra Bonvillain, and lettering by Aditya Bidikar. There’s something “light” about the look of the comic. Much like Waid’s writing, the design of the characters, pages, colors chosen, enhance that classic, more positive vibe of it all. Even the darker moments of the comic are enhanced with “reds” and “oranges” that create a glow about the comic. Pages and the position of characters have a dynamic aspect about it that catches the eye. The comic is beautiful to look at and with the story told, it’s a perfect match of visuals and tone.
I’m still not totally sold on team-up comics but Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #1 is a hell of a start. The comic just nails things in every way. There’s something really fun about it, the perfect comic to just lay back and lose some time reading. Fun writing and beautiful visuals come together for a fantastic beginning.
