I always feel a bit weird reviewing a Power Rangers figure as I didn’t watch the show and I’m not very knowledgeable about the characters, but I do remember Finster and his two friends from the Rita cutaways. Those character designs made an impression, so I was very much looking forward to getting this interesting looking creature in figure form. Let’s take a look!
The packaging is the standard Lightning Collection box, but the beautiful art style is even more appealing here than usual since the character is a bit more unique.
Finster comes with a few accessories including two extra hands, a rolling pin, a trowel, a removeable necklace, a sculpting tool, two putty patroller sculptures and a briefcase that fit the two patrollers. He has two right hands that look the same, designed to hold the scalpel-like sculpting tool. He has a left grip hand that hold the trowel and rolling pin well and a more relaxed hand for gesturing. The hands swap fairly easily which is a treat because the Lightning Collection hands can be a pain to swap sometimes
The pin is brown with a silver middle, though the middle has a wooden texture to it, so that seems a bit off to me. The pin and the trowel both can be holstered on the front of the apron.
The necklace has a magnifying lens at the end and is cast in flexible clear plastic so the handle can be a little bendy, but it is painted very cleanly.
The case is cast in a flexible gray plastic and hinges open in a way that lays flat when open. There are stiffer trays within that contain one gray Putty sculpture and spaces for the two tiny tan sculptures. I was surprised to see that the little Putty stood on their own with their tiny little feet.
The sculpting tool is pretty tiny and flexible and I would be really worried about losing it, but the right hands are designed to hold it tightly. You can also wedge it in between his thumb and first two fingers for different holding positions.
The sculpting is very nice on this guy with some great clothing wrinkles all over the outfit and nice textures on the apron and Finster’s hair and skin. The glasses are a separate piece of flexible plastic glued down to the head and mine are a bit cockeyed. Otherwise he’s pretty cool. He’s got great proportions and sharp detail and the articulation is integrated well into the sculpt while still pretty functional. Finster has:
- Ball and socket head, shoulder sockets, and waist
- Swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles
- Swivel thighs and boots
- Hinged jaw
The shoulder sockets are ball jointed so they have a bit of a butterfly motion as well as a shrugging movement. The shoulders and elbows get 90 degree range of motion, maybe a bit more in the elbow, but I think that’s pretty great considering the bagginess of the pants and sleeves. He gets really nice tilt on the head and waist ball joints and the articulated jaw adds a lot of personality and variety to the figure. The only real downside is that the apron skirt is a little stiff, so he doesn’t get much forward leg movement.
The paint is solid and I do really like the metallic paint used on the glasses and jewelry. He could use a wash to bring out that craggy skin texture and to knock down some of the plastic shine on the hands.
Overall, I love this figure a lot. I think the lightning collection really shines with these more unique characters and I hope to see more. I had bought this figure thinking I could customize him into a Puppet Master figure for Marvel Legends, but he’s just too cool for me to cut up. He’s just an interesting looking little unique weirdo.
