Once you get everything you want in this world, how long can you be satisfied? This level of contention is always subjective. We all put together a list in our mind, and sometimes even on paper, as to what this would be like. We tend to give a timeline to this list and if we don’t reach these goals in set amount of time we’re often disappointed by reality.
Rarely do we ever speak of what comes after we have reached these goals. Most people would have you believe that you would eternally grateful for having reached those heights but the reality is much more complicated. When we reach that “perfect” life, melancholy has a funny way of showing up. In Ghost Rider #1 we find a seemingly “settled” Johnny Blaze, but something inside him screams for more than what he has.
We find Johnny at his therapist’s office, where he has just gotten in trouble for not showing up to their sessions, as he tells her about his sleepless nights and how the monsters in his nightmares consume his every thought., to the point which only alcohol can ease his mind, often drinking to until his eyes close. As we find out he is married with two kids living in a town called Hayden’s Falls , but everything changed two months ago, when he wrecked his bike in a near fatal accident, which gave him memory gaps and what he thinks are hallucinations. We are also taken to the FBI, where Talia Warroad, the former agent of SHIELD, now works for the bureau, and has sensed a spike in paranormal activity, leading her to Johnny. Things get even worse in Hayden’s Falls, as a mysterious stranger has wandered into town, creating hate and discontent within everybody he passes by in town. Johnny soon finds out that the mysterious stranger is Zeb, who was sent there to find him, as we find out that Johnny had been spellbound and this reality is a lie. By the issue’s end, we find out he got trapped by someone hell with a horde of demons, , as he looks to find out why.
Overall, Ghost Rider #1 is a great first issue that will remind fans of Wandavision but much scarier. The story by Percy is excellent. The art by creative team is astonishing. Altogether, this comic is definitely what nightmares are made of.
