Lord of the Rings The One Ring RPG releases digitally with physical pre-orders

The second edition of The One Ring Roleplaying game, the Lord of the Rings tabletop RPG that was launched on Kickstarter by publisher Free League earlier this year, released digitally today and opened for physical pre-orders. PDF versions of the game are available immediately, while physical copies are expected to ship in January next year.

Three main sets have been released for the game. The Core Rules book contains the revised, second edition ruleset, and spans the usual gamut of tabletop RPG features: player options for creating heroes and exploring Middle-earth, GM (or Loremaster, as the role’s called in the game) resources for running adventures and conducting the dark forces, a bestiary with a spread of monsters from Orc Soldiers to Barrow-Wights, and a pre-written introductory adventure that teaches the game to players and Loremasters.

The One Ring Starter Set is also available, containing a streamlined rulebook, eight pre-generated characters, an adventure that focuses on the Shire, an accompanying compendium of lore about the Hobbit homeland, and the necessary dice and components needed to play the game.

A Loremaster’s Screen is also available to pre-order. It contains the usual batch of rule reminders, dice tables, and lore information printed on its inside. It comes bundled with the Rivendell Compendium, an additional supplement that contains lore about Rivendell and its inhabitants, alongside extra player options, such as rules for creating a High Elf character.

After launching for crowdfunding in March earlier this year, The One Ring RPG second edition raised over $2 million on Kickstarter, becoming the highest-funded tabletop RPG to ever launch on the platform. Set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, the game sees players create a band of heroes to adventure across Middle-earth and fight the growing Shadow of Sauron’s forces.

Originally released in 2011 by Age of Sigmar: Soulbound and Warhammer 40k: Wrath & Glory publisher Cubicle 7, The One Ring RPG was placed in the hands of Free League in late 2020. Free League said its second edition of the game will update and streamline the rules, visually redesign its art and graphics, and include new areas of Middle-earth to explore.

You can buy The One Ring Core Rules for $53.00 / £39.72 from Free League’s webstore, alongside the game’s starter set for $47.30 / £35.56, the Loremaster’s screen for $30.75 / £23.10, or get all three together for $110.44 / £82.93. When you pre-order a physical copy, you’ll get immediate access to a PDF version of the product, too.

You can also buy digital copies directly from DriveThruRPG.
