As far as I know, the pre-order for this figure never went up, so I was pretty surprised to see it on the shelf last week. I did love the season finale of What If…, so I had to pick this up. Let’s take a look at the Marvel Legends Captain Carter Stealth Suit variant!
The box is the usual box for this line with a big ‘ol window up front and pretty artwork on the sides and back. The figure comes with a shield and that’s it. I don’t recall her using a gun in the show, but I wouldn’t have minded a gun holding alternate hand for variety’s sake.
The shield has some shiny metallic plastic and paint on the front and straps on the back. The straps work okay, but they are a little large and the shield can wobble around them a bit. I wish there was a way for her to wear it on her back.
The whole figure is re-use of the first Captain Carter from the What If… wave and it works a lot better than I would have thought even though some of the costume details are way off. They did make an attempt to paint in a couple extra costume details here and there like the gray bits on the thighs and torso, but it ended up a bit muddy and looking more like weathering to me than anything else.
I think the thing I do wish they had changed most is her hair. She has a different hairstyle in this costume since it takes place in the present day. Still, I’m not all that bothered by the inaccuracies here, maybe since it is an alternate universe figure anyway?
Articulation is good with:
- Swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, hips, and ankles
- Ball and socket head and mid-torso
- Swivel thighs, biceps, and ankles
- Double hinged knees and elbows
My figure had frozen joints in the wrists and ankles that I had to heat and loosen, but the ankles don’t have great range due to the calf covers. The forward kick movement on the hip is also disappointing with less than 90 degrees forward motion. While posing found myself missing butterfly hinges and the ab crunch/waist ball joint combo from the Classified line and Peggy is a little bit stiff. A boot swivel would have been better than the ankle swivel under the boot flap and it is really weird to see a straight cut bicep in this day and age. I do like the tilt on the neck even with the restrictive hair and mid-torso and the pinless double hinged knees and elbows look and work great.
Paint is acceptable, with the highlight being the beautifully clean face printing on the portrait. Overall, this is a neat, if not super faithful figure and I’m glad to add her to my What If… collection. The animated look doesn’t mesh perfectly with other MCU figures, but I like her with the comic book stuff quite a bit.
