Upcoming Warhammer 40k videogame Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters dropped a new dev diary yesterday, giving us a peek at some of the Chaos forces you’ll be cleansing from existence as the Grey Knights. The XCOM-style turn-based tactics game will have you battling the plague-spewing spawn of Nurgle, and introduce a few familiar miniatures from the tabletop.
Chief among them is, of course, the Plague Marine – originally the Death Guard, one of the Traitor Legions of Space Marines that was corrupted by Grandfather Nurgle’s ‘gifts’, they’re now all decaying flesh and rotting internal organs. Alongside those battleline units are some bigger minions of the Plague God. A Great Unclean One (one of Nurgle’s Greater Daemon lieutenants) is shown waddling about the battlefield, and a Mephitic Blight-hauler trundles along in another shot. What looks like a Helbrute is also pictured grappling a Grey Knight with its tentacles.
There’s also a brief tease of the Death Guard’s big-daddy Deamon Primarch Mortarion at the very end of the video. The greatest of Nurgle’s Daemon Princes, check out our comprehensive guide to the Death Guard for this fella’s lore and place in the grimdark future.
All of the units shown – both those of the Grey Knights and the Death Guard – look to visually match their miniature counterparts. The dev diary says that although weapons and abilities will closely align with the Warhammer 40k tabletop game, they have been tweaked to suit Daemonhunters’ mechanics. Ultimately, they should capture the theme and lore of Warhammer 40k, even if they might not completely match what’s found in the Grey Knights and Death Guard codexes.

The environments and levels of Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters also look to be somewhat dynamic. As Nurgle’s plague – the ‘bloom’ – spreads across the galaxy, planets will become infected, granting the Chaos forces that reside there additional combat buffs. Warp surges, too, might spontaneously spring up, summoning enemy reinforcements, trigger mutations in enemies, or simply limit your own abilities.
An upgrade system will let you enhance the abilities, weapons, and stats of your Grey Knights, as well as the capacity of your ship. Improve its speed at hopping around the map, and you’ll be able to route out the pestilence before it spreads between worlds.
