D&D: ‘Fizban’s Treasury Of Dragons’ Delayed– But the Deep Dragon Was Unveiled

The new Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons book might be delayed, but one of the new dragons that lurk within has been unveiled.

We still have another week or so before Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons releases. It promises to bring with it two new dragon-themed subclasses, a host of new dragon categories of dragons (including the disturbing elder brain and beholder dragons), and new spells, magic items, and all sorts of things you’d find in a dragon’s treasure. But while the book has been delayed, the internet is still the internet and has worked its magic before the book hits the stores– so some of the new dragons waiting within have been revealed.

Let’s take a look at the Deep Dragon, as revealed by Nerd Immersion over on YouTube.

Deep Dragons of the Past

This new design takes the Deep Dragon in a vastly different direction from previous editions. For contrast, here are some older pictures of Deep Dragons:

That’s from 4th edition; and here’s a look at the 3rd edition Deep Dragon:

As you can see, past versions of the dragon have been lankier, but they’ve also got this weird, silver dragon crossed with a snake kind of vibe going on. But that looks much different in the recent edition. This new look for the deep dragon feels more like a horrifying Underdark creature, which makes sense. That’s what deep dragons have been since they were first conceived in the 2nd Edition.

They’ve always been slender and agile, which makes them more suited for the narrow tunnels of the Underdark, outside of which they are seldom seen. And that seems like something embodied in the new Deep Dragon– it’s way more creepy and crawly. It’s got wings that attach to its forelegs, more like a bat or some other cave-dwelling flyer, and its long beak gives it an almost avian look. The eyes are much more suited to picking up movement in the pitch dark, and there are also new growths on its neck. Spines? Fungal shelves? Who can say?

Regardless, the Deep Dragon will likely as not maintain much of its previous abilities. In past editions, Deep Dragons breathed psychic energy that did no damage– instead, it caused targets to be dominated. This dragon is the last thing I’d want to take control of my mind and body.

What do you think of the deep dragon’s new look? Super creepy? Or something to be protected at all costs? Let us know in the comments!
