There’s a new hard-hitting arena sports game in town – here’s what you need to know about Mantic’s OverDrive.
OverDrive, the newest addition to Mantic’s growing titles, launches in September. The fast-paced, two-player game is set in the sci-fi Warpath universe. Create your team of giants and play in brutal matches with game modes that range from capture the flag to pass the bomb. It has a small footprint that will easily fit on your dining room table and some great minis. Take a look at the core mechanics with the folks from BlackJack Legacy and Rob from Mantic Games.
OverDrive is an arena-based sports game set in the futuristic Warpath Universe. You take control of powerful giants that must fight it out in the arena across six very different ‘game modes’ – which we’ll be looking at more closely throughout the week. OverDrive is designed for two players, with each player taking charge of three giants each and matches take around 60-90 minutes… perfect if you want a couple of games during a club night.
OverDrive features alternate activations but you’ve only got four activations per rush (turn). Each of the giants can be activated up to two times, so you’ve got to choose carefully about when you want to activate a particular player and hopefully plan ahead to pull off those important tactical decisions.
The game itself is inspired by the multiplayer modes of various video games, like TimeSplitters 2 (an aging reference there), Splatoon or Overwatch. As such, the game plays extremely quickly and there are only a few actions that you’ll need to learn when starting to play: movement (running), slamming (hitting your opponent), and ranged attacks (shooting your opponent). This means the rules can be grasped super quick and you can be up and slamming in no time at all!

OverDrive features SIX different game modes, which means you’ve got plenty of replay value in the core game. Read this blog to find learn about the six modes:
- King of the Hill
- Pass the Bomb
- Capture the Flag
- Killing Streak
- Invade
- DodgeBrawl
In OverDrive, you take on the role of a Coach traveling around the galaxy before picking your team of giants and battling it out in the arena. You’ve got the option of playing one-off matches – and choosing one of the six different game modes – or you can play interlinked match-ups as part of a league. You can learn more about leagues here.
