Warhammer 40K: Black Templar Relic Rules Previews

The Black Templars are getting updates for their Relics and we’re taking a look at them today.

When we saw the new models coming for the Black Templars we were pretty excited. GW is releasing a new upgrade pack that actually includes a ton of bits that also have new relic options, too. This is great for Black Templar players as it give you the chance to model the new accessories on the troopers that are carrying the relics. Personally, I hope we see all chapters get these cool relic upgrades…but that’s another story.

Anyhow, GW has also put out some new reveals for the Relics and their rules so let’s see what they are going to do on the tabletop!

“By swearing vows to a Chaplain on the eve of battle, a Black Templar can become an honoured Relic Bearer. This commitment demonstrates the warrior’s unspeakable devotion to the Emperor, and it lets you field a powerful piece of wargear. “

To kick things off, we see how these new Relic Bearer rules are going to work. It does seem like the Black Templars are going to have a LOT of relics floating around the tabletop. But perhaps more importantly there is a RULE that says “This model should be distinctive from the others in the unit, and before each battle you should make it clear to your opponent which model has the upgrade.”

That is kind of a big deal! Not only is GW making it a rule that you need to tell your opponent who’s got what relic, you also need to make it distinctive – thankfully there’s new bits for that.

Ideally, you’ll be able to use these upgrades from the pack to make it very clear which model has which relic. That’s going to be important when the Holy Orbs start flying…

Without a propper, distinctive model a Holy Orb coming out of nowhere could be a pretty big deal. Thankfully, with the new rule you’ll at least know which unit (and model) is packing the Holy Orb and it won’t mysteriously end up in across the board in a more convenient unit. Not that players would ever do such a thing.

It’s not just Holy Orbs either. There’s also more Relics like the Icon of Heinmann:

Just be sure to note that it’s when the attacks are allocated to the model with the relic and not the unit. There’s a bunch more relics in the book, too. Especially if you’re wanting to build a crusade force!

The first batch of Black Templar Preorders are going live this weekend!
