Goatboy here, to talk about how I plan out picking secondaries once I have an army ready to go. Let’s talk Grey Knights.
I am trying to mentally get ready for my GW GT event next week. I haven’t gotten a lot of playtesting in with the new army and while I am not expecting to win a ton of games I did want to try some things out. Overall it is going to be a slugfest as I try to figure out when to shunt, when to gate, and who I can throw my bullet hell at. Still – these are the things I need to mentally prepare for.
Picking Secondaries
First – making sure I pick the right secondaries. I wrote up my cheat sheet with the Secondaries I will most likely take. So far the Purifying Ritual seems to be a good auto take as it is pretty brutal to gain points and seems powerful as it lets me do an action to gain points and I can still shoot and charge. Any of these Psychic actions seem very powerful as it isn’t like a normal action. You are not forgoing your models shooting/assaulting and just removing a Smite or other basic psychic spell. Is it too powerful? I think it is right on the edge as most armies can barely do them and the Grey Knights and Thousand Sons have so many psychic extra bits that it makes it easy. Still this is an objective I can easily max out without really having to worry about the opponent. Having one of these is a great one to take.
After that I could do Engage as I do have an army that can teleport and move around. This is pretty easy and fits into the game I will want to play as I get giant suits into range and figuring out what to kill. I can always shift things around and as long as I don’t play a crazy big army I can get into the right places. So this isn’t a bad one and I just have to look at what I am playing against.
From there I won’t be doing Banners or any other “action” based one as I need to have Purifying Ritual up and doing an action turns that off for me. This means ROD will most likely go away too. I have them there if it is a small objective table – 4 or so and it will be hard for me to get to 3 of them. I can do ROD with teleporting Strikes etc – but again it is really dependent on the mission I am playing.
To the Last is a no as well as my big expensive models are designed to be shooting and getting mixed in. They cannot hide and still be effective so that one gets kicked out. This leaves me looking at things like Grind them Down as my army can survive and kill things pretty well. This most likely leaves me in that direction of the game and again depends on the army.
Which then starts to go into who I am playing. Bring it down or Titanic one are all dependent on what I am fighting. I know a lot of players will take Abhor the Witch and Bring it down versus me so again that is dependent on what I am facing. This type of planning is what all players need to do if they want to compete in a game.
The Cunning Plan
Right now the plan is to take the following:
- Purifying Ritual (Most games – unless I won’t be able to get to 3 Objectives easy enough)
- Retrieve Octarius Data if I don’t take Purifying Ritual
- Engage on all Fronts or Strangehold – dependent on the amount of Objectives
- Grind them Down
- Bring it Down or Assassinate – depending on the army
Do you plan out your missions before an event? This way you can spend less time picking and just get ready to deploy and go?
